new SF community Sep. 29th, 2004 @ 04:42 am

I’ve started a new specialised SF community. It’s for discussions of science fiction, but not the Star Wars type of SF, or the space-battles-and-laser-cannons type of military SF, or the kind of Hard SF that can only be appreciated by those with post-graduate qualifications in both pure mathematics and physics!

It’s more for stuff like Bruce Sterling - SF that is more interested in people and society than technology (sometimes it gets called Soft SF). And imagination-challenging SF, like J. G. Ballard and Philip K. Dick. And authors who transcend the limitations of descriptions like Hard SF and Space Opera, authors like Alastair Reynolds. And authors who merrily trample the boundaries between genres, like Harlan Ellison. And cyberpunk and slipstream. And SF that addresses ethical issues and even alternate history.

The sorts of thing we don't discuss are military SF, Hard SF and authors like Heinlein and Niven.

The community is

I loved William Gibson's first trilogy, the Sprawl trilogy, and I loved "Pattern Reognition", but I haven't read his other trilogy. Is it as good as his other work?

Hullo!

To spark conversation and getting-to-know-each-other-ness, here's a guideline for introductory posts -- you are of course under no obligation to follow, and in fact you could do something entirely different if you please -- but if you're stuck and still want to say something, how about talking about:

-your name
-where you're from (your country, province, or state, for example)
-your hobbies or career
-something unique about yourself
-your favourite movies, books, music
-authors you like (or detest!)
-your religious beliefs
-your opinion on the current state of world politics
-your pets

I will fill these in for myself later tonight or maybe tomorrow, depending on how horribly hectic the rest of the evening will be. ;) Have fun.

I just wanted to say hello.
» Welcome!
Welcome to F:F:F, and here's the oh-so-impressive first post. :)

Anyone is welcome to join, and no subject is taboo. I look forward to watching the community grow and evolve.
